Jobsite and Backup Power for Washington Contractors

Power on a jobsite is not always there when you need it. New construction before the panel is energized, a detached garage or shop with no circuit run yet, a remote property, or a plain outage in the middle of a job. For years the only answer was a gas generator. A battery-based portable power station is now a real alternative for some of that work. Here is when one actually earns its place in your kit, and when it does not.

Most new contractors do not need one on day one

If you do service and repair work in occupied homes, there is almost always a working outlet a few feet away. You do not need to haul power to the job. A portable power station is a specific-problem purchase, not a startup-checklist item, and buying a $1,000-plus unit before you have a real use for it is money that belongs in your bond, insurance, and first-month expenses instead.

When it actually earns its keep

You start needing portable power when the job does not come with it:

No live power on site yet. New construction or a remodel where the service is not energized, or an outbuilding with no circuit. You need to run tools before the electrician is done.

Interior work where a gas generator is a non-starter. A gas generator produces carbon monoxide and cannot be run indoors, period. For finish and remodel work inside an occupied structure, a battery station is often the only safe way to bring your own power.

Noise-sensitive settings. Occupied homes, tight neighborhoods, early starts, or anywhere a screaming generator makes you the contractor the neighbors complain about. A battery station is silent.

Keeping critical things running through an outage. Your phone, laptop, a site camera, or a single important tool staying up while the power is out, without dragging a generator out for a short outage.

Battery station versus gas generator: the honest tradeoff

Neither one is simply better. They solve the problem differently.

Gas generator. Cheaper per watt up front, and you can refuel and keep going indefinitely. But it is loud, it produces exhaust so it cannot run indoors, it needs fuel on hand, and it has an engine to maintain.

Battery power station. Silent, zero emissions so it can run indoors, and nothing to maintain. The catch is capacity: once you drain it, you recharge it (from the wall, from your vehicle, or from solar), so it is limited by its battery size rather than by how much fuel you carry. It also costs more up front for the same output.

For interior remodel and finish work, the battery usually wins. For all-day heavy draw on an open site, a gas generator still rules, or contractors pair the two: run the generator outside and use it to recharge the battery, or add a solar panel to top the battery up during the day.

What to actually check before you buy

Match the unit to your real tools, not to the brand on the box:

Continuous output (watts). This has to exceed the running draw of the tool you plan to power. Just as important, it has to handle the startup surge: a table saw, air compressor, or large miter saw spikes well above its running wattage for a moment when it kicks on, and an underpowered station will trip instead of starting it.

Capacity (watt-hours). This is how long it runs before it needs a recharge. More watt-hours means more runtime and more weight.

Outlets and recharge options. Enough of the right outlets for your gear, and how it recharges (wall, vehicle, solar) and how long that takes.

Weight. These get heavy fast as capacity climbs. If it lives in the truck and comes out occasionally, that is fine; if you carry it up stairs all day, weight matters.

Where to look
