Your Washington contractor registration does not renew itself, and a missed date can put you in the same position as a contractor who never registered. This guide walks through how often you renew with the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), what it costs, what can suspend your registration early, and the other renewals that run on separate clocks. It is educational, not legal advice. Confirm every date and amount with L&I before you act.

How often you renew and what it costs

Under state law, a contractor registration is valid for two years and has to be renewed on or before the expiration date. The L&I fee schedule lists $150.20 for each issuance, renewal or reregistration of a contractor registration, and that schedule shows an effective date of July 1, 2026. Fees are set by rule and can change, so check the amount on your renewal notice or on the L&I registration page before you pay.

How to renew online with L&I

If nothing about your business has changed, you can renew online. L&I says you will need your 12-digit contractor registration number and your UBI number, and you pay the renewal fee at the end. Before you start, L&I tells you to use its Verify tool to check that your bond, insurance and registration are all in good order. Do that first. A problem you find before you pay is much cheaper than one you find after.

If your business information has changed, such as a new address, a new owner or a new business structure, do not just click through a renewal. Update the record with L&I so the registration matches what is real.

Your bond and insurance must stay in force

Renewal is only one piece. Your registration depends on your bond and liability insurance staying active the whole time you are registered. Under RCW 18.27.060, if your surety bond or other security is canceled, or your insurance policy is canceled, your registration is automatically suspended on the effective date of the cancellation. That means a missed insurance premium or a lapsed bond can suspend you in the middle of your two-year term, even if your renewal date is a year away.

L&I says it suspends a registration when the registration requirements are not met, and that it will notify you by certified mail within 2 days of the suspension. Do not wait for that letter. Ask your agent or surety to alert you before any policy or bond is canceled or allowed to expire, and make sure the replacement is in place before the old one ends. For more on how bonds work, see Washington contractor bond explained and general liability insurance for Washington contractors.

What happens if your registration lapses

Treat your expiration date as a hard deadline. State law makes it a gross misdemeanor for a contractor to advertise, offer to do work, submit a bid, or perform any work as a contractor without being registered. The same statute says a person is guilty of a separate gross misdemeanor for each day worked in certain circumstances, so days of unregistered work can add up quickly. Read RCW 18.27.020 or ask L&I how it applies to your situation.

There is also an advertising rule. Under RCW 18.27.100, all advertising that shows your name or address must show your current registration number. After you renew, check your truck lettering, website, estimates, invoices and online listings. If a lapse or suspension has happened, ask L&I what you may and may not do while you fix it.

Reinstating a suspended registration

L&I states that you may reinstate your registration online or in person, and it lists a reinstatement fee of $70.90. Fix the underlying problem first, usually a bond or insurance gap, because L&I suspends when the requirements are not met. L&I's pages we reviewed do not describe a grace period for registrations that simply expire, so do not count on one. If you are past your date, contact L&I right away and ask exactly what you need to do.

Renewals that run on separate clocks

Your contractor registration is not the only renewal you may owe. Trade licenses and business filings each have their own dates.

Electrical contractor licenses

Electrical work falls under chapter 19.28 RCW. L&I says electrical contractor licenses must be renewed every 2 years. The fee schedule in WAC 296-46B-909 lists $306.20 for a renewal completed fully online and $353.90 for a renewal made in person, by mail, or by fax, effective July 1, 2026. If the license has been expired for more than 90 days, L&I says you cannot renew online and you must contact L&I.

Electrician certificates

Each electrician certificate renews on its own schedule. L&I says you must renew your electrician certificate every 3 years, and renewal requires 24 hours of approved continuing education, including 8 hours of code update and 4 hours of RCW and WAC. The online renewal fee in the rule is $92.60. L&I also says renewal fees double after expiration, and an electrician certificate that has been expired for more than 90 days cannot be renewed, so retesting is the only option.

Plumbing contractor licenses and plumber certificates

Plumbing falls under chapter 18.106 RCW. L&I's fee rule says a plumbing contractor registration is valid for two years from the date of issuance, renewal or reregistration, and lists $148.10 for that renewal, effective July 1, 2026. Confirm the amount on your renewal card before you pay.

Plumber certificates are separate. L&I says plumber certification renews on your birthdate every 3 years, and journey level, residential and residential service plumbers need 24 hours of continuing education, including at least 12 hours of plumbing code. The renewal fee for those certificates is $242.70. If your certification has been expired for 90 calendar days and you have not paid the renewal fee or completed continuing education, L&I says you must retest to reinstate it. Check L&I's plumbing pages for the full hour breakdown.

Business license (UBI) and Secretary of State annual report

Two more renewals sit outside L&I. The Department of Revenue handles your state business license. DOR says a UBI number is a nine-digit number that registers you with several state agencies, and that licenses with state or city endorsements must be renewed annually. Renewals received after the expiration date are charged a late penalty fee. You renew by logging in to My DOR, and DOR's page does not list a single flat fee, so the amount you see depends on your endorsements.

If you operate as an LLC or corporation, the Secretary of State also requires an annual report. All domestic and foreign business entities must file one yearly, due by the last day of the month in which the business was originally formed or registered. The fee for profit entities, including LLCs, is $70, and an extra $25 delinquency fee applies if the entity's status is listed as delinquent. Failing to file on time results in a delinquent status and may lead to administrative dissolution. Do not let this one slide.

Check your status with L&I Verify

The L&I Verify tool shows whether a business has an active contractor registration. You can search by business name, license number, workers' comp account number or UBI number. Run your own business through it a few weeks before each renewal. You can also use it on other companies. Our Washington contractor license lookup guide explains what to look for.

A simple renewal checklist

  1. Write down your registration expiration date and set reminders 90, 60 and 30 days out. Our Washington reminders page can help.
  2. Run your business through Verify and confirm your registration, bond and insurance all show correctly.
  3. Confirm your bond and liability policy do not expire or cancel before your next registration date.
  4. Gather your 12-digit registration number, UBI number and payment method.
  5. Renew online with L&I and save the confirmation.
  6. Renew any electrical or plumbing contractor licenses and trade certificates, and finish continuing education before the deadline.
  7. Renew your DOR business license and file your Secretary of State annual report if you are an LLC or corporation.
  8. Update your advertising and paperwork so your current registration number appears wherever your name or address does.
