Short answer: Yes. RCW 23.95.405 says a domestic entity and a registered foreign entity shall designate and maintain a registered agent in Washington. You can name yourself or your business at a Washington address, or pay a commercial agent. Northwest charges $125 a year and ZenBusiness $199 a year as of October 2026.

Every formation service pushes registered agent service hard, because it is the recurring fee that keeps paying after the one-time filing. Whether you need to buy it is a different question from whether you need to have one. Here is the law, the options and the real cost.

Is a registered agent required in Washington?

Yes. RCW 23.95.405 says "The following shall designate and maintain a registered agent in this state:" "(1) A domestic entity; and" "(2) A registered foreign entity." That covers your LLC from the day it is formed. Northwest's Washington page notes the practical effect: a business registration filing "will be rejected if you don’t already have a registered agent."

What does a registered agent do?

Receives legal papers and official state mail for the business at a Washington street address during business hours. If someone sues your company, the agent is who gets served. The agent's name and address are public record.

Who can be your registered agent?

Washington law splits agents into two kinds. A "Noncommercial registered agent" includes "An individual or domestic or foreign entity that serves in this state as the registered agent of an entity;" (RCW 23.95.105). A "Commercial registered agent" means "a person listed under RCW 23.95.420", the companies that do this for a living. Either way, "A registered agent shall not be appointed without having given prior consent in a record to the appointment." (RCW 23.95.415), which is the consent box you check when you name yourself.

Can you be your own registered agent?

An individual serving in this state fits the noncommercial definition, and most single-owner contractors do exactly this. The trade-offs: your home or shop address becomes public, you have to be reachable there during business hours, and if you move you must update the state. For a contractor who works out of the truck all day, missed service of process is the real risk.

What a commercial registered agent costs

Northwest Registered Agent: "$125 Per Year" for Washington. ZenBusiness: Registered Agent Service "$199/year". LegalZoom says it "can do it for you" but does not print the price on its LLC page. Prices checked October 13, 2026 on each vendor’s own pricing page. Vendors change prices and plan names without notice; confirm before you buy.

How to decide

  1. If you have a Washington address where someone is reliably present in business hours and you do not mind it being public, be your own agent and save the fee.
  2. If you run from home and want the address off the record, or you are rarely at a fixed address, pay the $125 to $199 a year.
  3. Either way, the agent goes on the Certificate of Formation. Our LegalZoom vs DIY page covers that filing and its $180 state fee.

The registered agent is only the entity step. The contractor steps that follow, UBI, business license, bond, insurance and L&I registration, are in how to get a Washington contractor license.

Common questions

Can I be my own registered agent in Washington?

An individual who serves in this state as an entity’s registered agent fits the noncommercial registered agent definition in RCW 23.95.105, and the agent must consent in a record. Your address becomes public and you must be reachable there in business hours.

How much does a registered agent cost in Washington?

Northwest Registered Agent lists $125 per year for Washington and ZenBusiness lists $199 per year, as of October 13, 2026. Being your own agent costs nothing beyond keeping your address current with the state.

What happens if my LLC has no registered agent?

RCW 23.95.405 requires every domestic entity to designate and maintain one, and a registration filing without an agent is rejected. If a later change leaves you without one, update the Secretary of State record promptly.
