Short answer: Yes, use both. SCORE provides free, expert mentoring to small businesses, funded in part by the SBA, with three chapters covering Washington. A SCORE mentor is a person to talk to; the Startup Roadmap and Operator are the Washington-specific steps, numbers and training you work through between those conversations. Many owners bring their Contractor Lane roadmap to a SCORE meeting.

If you are starting a contracting business in Washington and someone told you to call SCORE, they gave you good advice. Here is what SCORE is, what it is not, and how it fits with what we do.
What is SCORE?
In its own words: "SCORE provides free, expert mentoring and resources to help small businesses start, grow, and succeed" and "Mentoring is always free, for the life of your business." It is "Funded, in part, through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration." Mentors are volunteers: "Join a nationwide network of experienced professionals dedicated to strengthening businesses and communities."
SCORE in Washington
SCORE's Washington page says there are "3 official SCORE chapters serving Washington," covering Seattle-Tacoma-Everett, Spokane-Coeur d'Alene, and Eastern and Northwest Washington. To start: "Enter your ZIP code to connect with a free SCORE Mentor near you today!" at score.org/wa.
Can I use SCORE and Contractor Lane together?
Yes, and it works well. A SCORE mentor is a person with business experience who will talk through your decisions. They are generalists; most are not Washington contractors and will not know the L&I registration order, the bond amounts or the specialty classes. That is what our free Washington roadmap and the paid Startup Roadmap cover, with the official source on every step. Bring your roadmap to the SCORE meeting and ask the mentor about the business decisions around it: pricing, your market, your first hires.
Once you are running, Operator is the same idea at the next stage: it audits where you are and gives you the next steps and team training. A SCORE mentor can be the accountability partner for working that list.
What SCORE will not do
- Register your business, file with L&I, or prepare filings. See how to get a Washington contractor license, or File it for me.
- Replace a CPA or an attorney.
- Give you a contractor-specific system. Mentors vary by background.
Other free help in Washington

Common questions
Is SCORE mentoring really free?
Yes. SCORE says mentoring is always free, for the life of your business. It is funded in part by the U.S. Small Business Administration and the mentors are volunteers.
Can I use SCORE and the Contractor Lane Startup Roadmap at the same time?
Yes. SCORE gives you a mentor to talk through decisions. The Startup Roadmap gives you the Washington-specific steps in order with the official sources. Owners often bring the roadmap to their SCORE meetings.
Does SCORE help with L&I contractor registration?
A mentor can talk through the decision, but SCORE does not file or prepare registrations. The Contractor Lane guides cover the registration steps, and the filing service can prepare supported Washington filings.
