Vehicle & advertising spec generator

Where does your license number actually have to appear?

On the truck? On the yard sign? On the website footer? Enter your state and your registration number and get a surface-by-surface answer, quoted from the statute — including the surfaces where the number is not required and you have been told otherwise.

The state whose registration number goes on the advertising.
Optional. Used to lay out the line you can hand to a sign shop.
Exactly as it reads on your state registration. We do not store it — it never leaves your browser.

Why only one state has real answers here

Advertising-display rules are written state by state, and they are unusually easy to get wrong because the exemptions are the interesting part. Washington, for example, requires the registration number on advertising that shows your name or address — and then excludes signs on motor vehicles and signs at your own premises from what counts as advertising at all. That exemption is a Washington statute. It tells you nothing about Oregon, and copying it across a state line would be inventing law.

So this tool answers Washington from the statute text, and for every other state it tells you plainly that we have not verified that state's rule and sends you to that state's own official source. We would rather ship one state that is right than fifty that are plausible.

Educational self-help information, not legal advice. Advertising rules change, and separate rules can apply to your specific trade, to vehicle registration and DOT markings, and to your city or county. Confirm with your state's licensing authority before you pay a sign shop.
