Every official source behind our state data — and every gap we have not closed.
This page is generated from our data files, not written by hand. The counts below are the real counts as of the last build. If a number here is wrong, the data is wrong, and we would rather you could see that than not.
What "verified" means here
Verified is a specific, checkable claim, not a marketing word. For a requirement or figure to be marked VERIFIED in our data, all of the following must be true:
- A current official state agency page or statute is on record as the source — not a blog, not a competitor's summary, not a model's memory.
- The result is written down in the data file next to the source, in plain language.
- A review date is recorded, so you can see how old the check is.
- For the deposit and lien layer, a verbatim quote from the official text is stored with the entry, and the figure was confirmed to match that text on the review date.
Our data files state the standard in their own words:
VERIFIED: A current official state agency or statute source, written result, and review date are recorded.
NOT VERIFIED: The requirement has not passed the strict evidence standard. It does not mean no requirement applies.
What verified does not mean
- It is not legal advice. None of this has been reviewed by an attorney. A VERIFIED entry means "this matches the official text we could read on the review date," nothing more. See our disclaimer.
- It does not mean current. Fees, thresholds, and deadlines change, sometimes between our review date and the day you read the page.
- NOT VERIFIED never means "no rule applies." It means we could not confirm it to our own standard. Assume a rule may exist.
- A working link does not prove a claim. A live URL proves the page loads, not that the number on our page is what that page says today.
- You confirm with the agency. Before you rely on any figure or deadline for your own business, check it with the agency that enforces it. That is on you, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
These are the standing warnings recorded in the data files themselves:
- A reachable URL does not prove a regulatory claim.
- NOT VERIFIED never means not required.
- Local permits, business licenses, and trade rules can apply in addition to statewide requirements.
- Do not auto-publish changed legal copy from scraper output without human review.
- A reachable URL does not prove a regulatory claim.
- NOT VERIFIED never means no requirement applies.
- Several entries record a figure the master research document got WRONG or mis-cited versus the live statute as of the review date - see entries whose note begins "MASTER DOCUMENT". Do not silently propagate those old figures into contractor-facing content.
- Deposit caps, cancellation periods, and lien deadlines are frequently keyed to project type (residential vs. commercial), claimant tier (prime vs. subcontractor vs. supplier), and trigger event (last furnishing vs. completion vs. filing). Always re-check which branch applies before quoting a number to a contractor.
- This file has not been reviewed by an attorney. Treat every VERIFIED entry as "matches the statute text we could read today," not as legal advice.
- Do not auto-publish changed legal copy from this file without human review.
How sources are chosen, reviewed, and updated
Every state in the source registry carries the same pair of dates: reviewed July 26, 2026, review by October 26, 2026. That is a 92-day cycle, and it is the cadence the data itself records — not a promise invented for this page.
The registry records its own usage rules, and our generators follow them:
- Use only sources whose authority is official-government.
- Treat entry-point sources as navigation aids. Follow the agency link to the controlling page before publishing a numeric or deadline claim.
- A live URL does not prove a claim. Save the exact source URL, quoted supporting text, and verification date with every claim.
- Never auto-rewrite regulatory copy from a scrape. A human must review changes in agency language.
- Check local and trade-specific rules in addition to this statewide registry.
Registry last generated August 1, 2026. Requirement matrix last generated August 1, 2026. Deposit and lien file last generated August 4, 2026. Source selection reviewed July 26, 2026, review by October 26, 2026.
Found something out of date? Email support@contractorlane.com with the state and the requirement. Corrections get checked against the agency source and fixed at the data layer, which means every page that uses that data is corrected at once.
Coverage, honestly
Three separate layers of data sit behind Contractor Lane, and they are not equally complete. Here is where each one actually stands.
| Data layer | Scope | Verified | Not verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official source registry | 50 states, 9 required categories per state | 1,028 sources, all official-government, all HTTPS | — |
| Contractor requirement matrix | 50 states × 12 categories | 600 of 600 cells | 0 cells |
| Deposit, progress-draw, and lien deadlines | 20 of 50 states, 7 fields each | 96 of 140 fields | 44 fields |
| Specialty-trade route data | 3,150 state-by-specialty routes expected | 0 published | All of it — not published, not used |
Contractor requirements: 600 of 600 cells verified
This is the licensing layer, and it is the one that is complete: 50 states across 12 requirement categories, 600 verified and 0 not verified. Reviewed July 26, 2026. The categories are:

Deposit and lien deadlines: 20 states, 44 fields explicitly not verified
This is the money layer — what deposit you may legally collect, how draws work, and the mechanics-lien notice, recording, and enforcement deadlines that protect your right to get paid. It is the newest and least complete data we have, and we are not going to round it up. 20 states are covered at all. Within those states, 96 of 140 fields are verified and 44 are marked NOT VERIFIED with a written blocker explaining why. Reviewed August 3, 2026.

Specialty-trade routes: not published, not used
We are building a deeper layer that answers, for a given state and a given specialty trade, exactly which licensing route applies. It is not done. The registry expects 3,150 state-by-specialty routes and currently publishes 0, with 0 reviewed packets compiled. Its status flag reads fail_closed_empty, which is deliberate: the registry is built to fail closed.
None of that data appears in any published guidance on this site. When it is verified to the standard above, it will show up here with real numbers first.
The full source registry
Every official source we rely on, grouped by state. 1,028 sources across 50 states and 366 distinct government domains. Tap a state to open it. Sources marked Direct answer a specific requirement; sources marked Entry point are agency landing pages we use for navigation, and we follow them to the controlling page before publishing any number.
